Reclaiming an Animal

This is the Animal Reclaim procedure used by HSPC staff

  • Verify that the animal belongs to the owner using:
    • Medical Veterinary Records
    • Dog License
    • Rabies Vaccination
    • If the person attempting a reclaim is unable to provide this documentation; special considerations may be made upon enough evidence (1 picture is not enough)

  • Complete the “Reclaim Information” Form
    • If it is a person who is watching the animal for the owner they will have to prove the animal is the said owners and it needs to be specified by the above documentation. We can call the veterinarian as well if the clinic is open.  On our reclaim form it needs to state that the person picking up the dog is picking it up on behalf of the owner. We can call the veterinarian they use as well.
  • Obtain a copy of the owners and/or person picking the dog up drivers license

  • Verify the pet has a current rabies vaccination.
    • if not issue a 7 Day notice.
Please write clearly the owners name and attach a copy of the drivers’ license to the 7 day notice.  Once written out they are left in the HO box behind the reception counter.
    • When owners return with vaccination records, please update in the computer and then toss out the notice
    • If the owners fail to return with proof of vaccination the Humane Officer’s will issue a citation.
  • If it's a dog and it resides in Portage County, verify they have a dog license.
    • If they don’t have a dog license offer to sell a  dog license.
    • If they decline to purchase a license  issue a 7 Day notice
    • Please write clearly the owners name and attach a copy of the drivers’ license to the 7 day notice.  Once written out they are left in the HO box behind the reception counter.
    • When owners return with a dog license, please update in the computer and then toss out the notice
    • If the owners fail to return with verification of license the Humane Officer’s will issue a citation
